a reason to rejoice

mild winter means just this an april afternoon
at the new year yesterday it poured for hours
a true downpour no understrength brief showers
but from the warm gulf like a great monsoon
still for the nonce there's no need here to swoon
at the bright day and the clear view of towers
the warmth that tells us that old nature's powers
to kind and gentle things are not immune
now what we have is sun and warmth and cheer
good things as we prepare for obligations
left at the pause and for the further reaches
of all the tasks that have fallen to our lot
we're not the masters of all situations
but experience is wise and sometimes teaches
that force alone cannot undo the knot
