increasing human knowledge

we name the creatures but we cannot tell
just what they will become after the name
has altered them perhaps wild else tame
silent perhaps or voicing with a yell
like beings just released from a dark hell
perhaps most apt and suited for a game
or living briefly like a match's flame
all power is concentrated in the spell
of naming that we take into our gift
to shape the world to suit our mode of thought
to exercise right to the final line
before our hearts all fall into the rift
or by the nightly monsters we are caught
for one brief moment we have force divine
