if we can find our way through the machine
others may follow and their eyes be clear
the clouds will break and the bright stars appear
we'll all rejoice and see how much is clean
after so long not knowing what you mean
all will be pleasant in the open air
you'll put aside all anger and all fear
and we'll forget the dark places between
while in the meadow we watch children dance
all of the ages come into our view
so much is signalled by a passing breeze
those were the realms given by evil chance
but now we see the world made wise and new
and for a time we seem to be at ease

it is not night when we can know the rose
all of our senses focused on that scent
the eye is taken and so is the nose

what happens in the heart we can't disclose
all that is told is not all that is meant
it is not night when we can know the rose

of suchlike things it is hard to dispose
no one can say just where the meaning went
the eye is taken and so is the nose

we know what happens and just how it goes
what was to be and what we had spent
it is not night when we can know the rose

our understanding takes us from repose
and leaves us in the end all discontent
the eye is taken and so is the nose

it is but human to accept the blows
as a just price for what we must attempt
it is not night when we can know the rose
the eye is taken and so is the nose
