the kingdom came

in the beginning we came from the sea
took our places on these lands with sorrow
worked without hope longed for a new morrow
and wondered what it meant just to be free
that would not happen save by high decree
and so we toiled and hoped to borrow
patience with every hole and furrow
and hope that somebody would hear our plea
now from the summer sun we've learned
there's now a chance to build our proper places
and have our toil not be distant and cold
for all these years the generations yearned
to be the masters of their own sweet faces
and get their tribute not in sweat but gold
